Team Pilipinas UPDATES

I believe the quarters is also round-robin, with leaders of A and C being grouped with seconds of B amd D, and the leaders of B and D to be grouped with the seconds from A and C.

Semis is the sudden-death crossover with leader of the first group facing the second placer of the other, the leader of the other faces the second of the first.

Williams not turning back on RP five
By Nelson Beltran
Wednesday, June 13, 2007
Kelly Williams clarified yesterday hes only taking a short break and hes more than willing to play for the RP team in the FIBA Asia Olympic qualifier in Tokushima, Japan in July 28-Aug. 5.

I just want to take couple of weeks off since it had been a long season (in the PBA). Afterwards Ill be back and hopefully they would still consider me for the national team, said Williams, adding hes too tired to join the Nationals in their Belgrade training trip.

The prized Fil-Am player stressed it would be a big honor to help the RP teams cause and hes looking forward to play in the Jones Cup and in the Tokushima joust.

The Nationals will compete in the Jones Cup in Taiwan in the first week of July.

Kelly is the workhorse of the team and hes really tired. He wants just a two-week rest, after which hes glad to join the RP team, said Sta. Lucia governor Buddy Encarnado.

I had relayed the matter to commissioner Noli Eala even before the national team left for Belgrade, Encarnado added.

Williams has been the heart and soul of Sta. Lucias campaign, making him among the top contenders for the seasons Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player plums although the Realtors failed to get past the wildcard round.

Apparently, there was some miscommunication between the Fil-Am and the RP team coaching staff which felt Williams was not keen on joining the Nationals since he has gone to US for a holiday.

RP team coach Chot Reyes has said he badly needs a player like Williams, a big man who can run and defend the perimeter.

Aside from Williams, Reyes also named former George Mason U Patriot Gabe Norwood as new addition to the RP team. Norwood, flying from Virginia, should be with the Nationals now in Belgrade.

Reyes is hopeful the Nationals would be a much tougher team when they come back from Belgrade.

The Nationals are being criticized for not having the smarts and toughness of the likes of Tembong Melencio, Robert Jaworski, Johnny Revilla and Ed Ocampo, said commissioner Eala.

Were smaller, so we have to use our heads. We have to be tough and refuse to back down. Hopefully, when they come back, theyre a much tougher team, Eala added.

FIBA, Baumann sever ties with BAP

Wednesday, June 13, 2007
The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has already distanced itself from the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP).

After receiving a letter from the BAP regarding the current state of Philippine basketball, FIBA secretary-general Patrick Baumann responded by saying that the BAP is no longer recognized by FIBA.

The BAP letter, dated May 22, 2007 and signed by Go Teng Kok who has supposedly resigned as its president, called for a more workable relationship between the BAP and the Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas.

The BAP letter said the current SBP leadership under Manny V. Pangilinan is preoccupied with the formation of the RP team, and at the expense of all the other programs as previously planned.

The BAP said it is planning to convene its National Congress next month. But it could be an exercise in futility.

In his letter dated June 1, 2007, Baumann stressed that, the Basketball Association of the Philippines is no longer recognized by FIBA.

He addedthat the use of the FIBA logo on the BAP letterhead is not allowed and the activities of the BAP can only be of domestic nature and only if approved by the new federation (SBP). Abac Cordero

ASIAN POWERHOUSES TO PLAY IN 4-NATION MANILA INVITATIONALS
China, Lebanon, Syria, RP national squads go to battle July 12-15

Tuesday, 19 June 2007

As the hour of reckoning nears, the San Miguel-Pilipinas national team gets to savor the sights and sounds of the forthcoming Olympic-qualifying FIBA-Asia Men's Championship in Tokushima when three potential major obstacles fly in next month for the PBA-presented 4-Nation Manila Invitational Championships set July 12-15.

The national teams of Syria, Lebanon and powerhouse defending champion China are arriving to test the mettle of Chot Reyes' squad which is currently near the close of a weeklong sojourn in Belgrade, Serbia.

The tournament format calls for single round robin, with the top two teams vying for the championship and the other two playing for third place.

Venue for the July 12 and 14 games is The New Arena in San Juan, while the Araneta Coliseum hosts the July 13 and 15 matches.

The Big Dome games on the13 and the 15th will serve as curtain-raiser for the PBA Fiesta Conference Finals.

The Tokushima FIBA-Asia, set July 28-August 5, will pick Asia's representative to the Beijing Olympics next year.

As Olympics host, China is seeded to the Games.

If the Chinese make it to the FIBA-Asia final game, then the other finalist will go to Beijing as well. If China finishes neither No.1 or No. 2, then only the FIBA-Asia champion gets a ticket to the Olympiad.

The Nationals are bracketed in Group A with China, Jordan and Iran, a bracket Reyes called the "Group of Death" for its toughness.

Undermanned RP 5 bows to Lions, made one big charge in the fourth quarter but could only close to within, 63-67, before the hosts finished them off with timely hits.

This was a great trip. Grabe ang laro dito. Ito ang tunay na basketball, said Mark Caguioa, who finished with 12 points. We all know the NBA is part entertainment. Dito, buhay nila ang basketball. I learned so much in our stay here.

Asi Taulava actually dominated the paint in the payoff period, blocking shots, hauling down the rebounds and scoring on a variety of moves as the Nationals threatened to turn the game around.

Coming off a 90-minute bus ride and arriving at the arena barely 30 minutes before game time, the Nationals started sluggishly, scoring the first four points but quickly falling behind, 16-7, as the Lions hit four straight 3-point shots.

Jimmy Alapag, Mark Caguioa, Gabe Norwood, Kerby Raymundo, and Asi Taulava tried to keep pace, but the starting unit of veterans point guard Milos Kasabasic, 65 shooting guard Vladimir Vlaskovic, 66 Nikolai Gacie, 69 power forward Danilo Mijanovic, and 610 center Dalibor Djapa would not budge.

Particularly unstoppable was their top player Mijanovic, a strong left-handed inside player with a deadly 3-point touch. Together with center Djapa, they hit six 3-pointers between them as each scored 16 points in the first half.

Only Caguioa and Mick Pennisi made shots in the first quarter before Ranidel de Ocampo hit a three-pointer as time expired, with the Nationals trailing 28-21.

The Nationals made a little run at the start of the second quarter as Jayjay Helterbrand and Renren Ritualo hit a couple of threes, but again Mijanovic and Djapa came to the rescue to thwart the Nationals rally.

WILLIAMS, MENK, YAP BOLSTER SMC-RP POOL
New additions likely to suit up for Jones Cup

SMC-Pilipinas is beefing up its pool of players with the addition of Kelly Williams, Eric Menk and James Yap, and has set the Jones Cup competition as the final cutoff date to determine the players to be sent to the FIBA-Asia Olympic qualifier next month in Japan.

Williams personally talked to PBA commissioner Noli Eala Wednesday, giving his commitment to play for the team even if hes to forego his planned US vacation.

Menk and Yap have also been invited to join the training upon the teams return from its training trip in Belgrade, Serbia.

"Im very happy with these developments specially with Kellys decision to forego his vacation. It speaks volumes of the man. Kelly showed true sign of commitment to help the cause of the RP team," said Eala.

"Im also thankful for Menk who manifested excitement and willingness to join the training without guarantee from coach Chot Reyes that he will make the Tokushima competition. Hopefully, James also accepts the invitation to join the training," Eala added.

Eala said Williams, Menk and Yap would likely be tapped for the Jones Cup, giving coach Reyes 14 players at his disposal in the tiring nine-day competition. Tony de la Cruz is likely to be relegated as reserve because of his injury.

"At this time, the Tokushima lineup is still an open field. Players already in the team definitely have the inside track. But at the end of the day, the players in best shape and who could best contribute for the team in Japan are likely to make it," said Eala.

"Were beefing up the team. Hopefully, this adjustment works for the betterment of the team as the Tokushima trip nears," Eala added.

The PBA commissioner expressed satisfaction on the teams Belgrade trip although it caused injuries to De la Cruz, Danny Seigle and Dondon Hontiveros.

Eala said Reyes is planning to use Seigle sparingly in the Jones Cup to preserve him for the 4-Nation Manila Invitational Championship. Seigle is nursing a hamstring pull.

Fil-Am player Gabe Norwood is also proceeding to the Jones Cup although his lawyer has yet to submit complete documents that will certify his Filipino citizenship.

"His papers are lacking but well do this properly. Well not cheat our way to getting someone whos not qualified," Eala said.

Yes!Menk is in n0t guaranteed though...The team badly need a w0rkhorse like him...

^unfortunately hatfield has other plans these c0ming m0nths...He's M0re smarter and str0nger this time ar0und...He should have been our dennis r0dman in our team minus the tatt00s and excessive late night parties...

we lead almost the whole game Chot Reyes thought the Japanese were pushovers kept experimenting with our line-up Asi wasn't put in the 4th quarter until the 3 min. mark

Dondon Hontiveros jumped in the air to pass the ball in the 2nd to the last possession and it became a turnover and eventually the gamewinner for the Japanese our last attempt was a tipped alley-oop play for Kelly Williams....
