Why are there ads on NikeTalk? The answer is inside.

I have a question.. if it cost so much to host.. who paid??? the tens of thousands of dollars???

Also if your going to do your own skin idea thing... don't not smart at all. You guys should stick to a simple look. Simple always wins.. look at google.

Although I haven't been here long enough to realize how much effort is in place to keep the site running. I do commend the staff and everyone who has participated to keep this site up and running. You have my support most definitely, also thank you for explaining thoroughly the changes in the coming months.

Thanks for the explanation of everything MethodMan, i'm sure everything will work out with the move.

I just have one question, will people be able to have PICTURES IN THEIR SIGNATURES with the new platform? or is it going to stay like it is now with the 5 line limit and no pictures? (i'm against that by the way, pictures in signatures are very distracting and annoying).

Thanks.

^ I like it the way it is. Anything more than 5 lines is pretty much OD.

Plus, we'd have 800 people putting Ezekiel 25:17 in XXL font as their sigs.

anyone worried about what niketalk will become? im not talking about the ads, just how the community has grown so big that we need to make these changes

one of the ads that i just saw was for an ad blocker. i found that pretty ironic and funny

and they'll probably keep it the same (no pics in sigs and no more than 5 lines).
Not new, just an alternate sreen name

same here. I think the rules (5 lines, no pics) works well.

Also, I agree that NT should have the same skin (black/white/red).

I read Meth's explination on page one and if anyone is against this idea then just don't go on NT. No one likes ads but its not the end of the world and if it helps NT I'm all for it. Theres also positives that come with this change so I don't take it as a negative at all.

nice.... just keep the ads in the top or bottom or side of the page, i.e. NOT in the middle of posts and NOT those dumb ads that expand to cover half the page. i think google adsense should avoid these problems.

anyway, i guess this needs to be done so i'm fine with it. we all get improved capabilities in return, although i did like the limited page views per day since it limited the time i spent on here.

i can only imagine what type of money that brings in. you should really try out CPM networks which pay per 1,000 impressions instead of per click. or both CPC and CPM ads together to see what works best.

right now google adsense is our only option...but in the future hopefully we will move to individually arranged ads where we would get to choose the people we'd allow to advertise, and thats probably when we will get to experiment between CPC and CPM ads

hopeful for the future!

i mean like you said..this is niketalk, 3,4 years on here...this is what it is to me, i had a hard time getting usta the facelifts and forum changes...i am a classic niketalk fan, i have seen people go and come...keep niketalk niketalk, i do think you know what i mean.

I'm with you. To me, this is my home online. This is how it's looked for years and this is how it SHOULD look. When we changed it away from the ORIGINAL look, people complained. When we changed it back TO the original look in honor of our 5 year anniversary, people complained. That tells me that people love consistency.

The only thing I can think of would be to allow users to select from multiple appearances. If people are really DYING to see NikeTalk with black text on a white background, they could have the option to select a different look - like Home / Away / Alternate / Retro uniforms.

That may be something we can do in the future... but form follows function around here. After all, nobody comes here just because of how the site LOOKS. The content and functionality are what's important.

are all the banned s/ns unbanned on the new server?

Not if I have anything to say about it!

If I banned you, I did so for a reason. I'm not about to have ezboard unban everyone who acted a fool on NikeTalk.

From what I've heard, we should be able to transfer everything we have now pretty cleanly to the new platform. That's the goal, at least. We'll get some ezboard people in here to clarify questions like that as soon as we can.

No, were not going to let users insert pictures into their signatures. That was never a bandwidth or cost issue, since those images were hosted off-site, it was always in effort to eliminate ANNOYING posting habits.

In fact, signature and image limits are something I was very concerned about when talking with Ezboards CEO about the new platform. Ive asked them to allow us to AUTOMATICALLY limit a users signature size and prohibit images so that we dont have to sit around nagging people to edit their loud and obnoxious signatures to comply with our policy.

I also want an automatically imposed limit on personal picture size. These are wish list features that we expect will be added in the months immediately following Yukus release. They are not, however, included among the initial feature set Yuku is expected to launch with.

The one thing I can confirm is that, when you upload your own picture to Yuku as your personal picture, it will automatically optimize that image for the personal picture space. In other words, if you upload a 1024x768 wallpaper and say you want it as your personal picture, the system will automatically resize the image to fit in the 60x60 pixel personal picture space. The result will be faster load times for all users, since we wont have to load enormous files just to see tiny pictures next to everyones name. Its a convenient feature, and were looking to have them take it one step further by allowing communities like ours to set limits on the types of personal pictures and signatures that users will be allowed to display in our forums.

Its natural for people to fear change to a certain extent. The truth of the matter, though, is that NikeTalk is ALWAYS changing. On one hand, I sometimes do miss the tiny little forum we had in 1999. EVERYONE knew their stuff. I NEVER felt like I had to teach a 12 year old how to use a computer or how to buy a sneaker. Every NT member was an EXPERT on shoes.

Of course, we had so few members that information was much harder to come by. Back in 99 sometimes Id find things out before theyd hit NT. These days, I can go and talk to a Nike Sales rep and Ill have seen every sample shoe they have on display and sometimes Ill even know things they DONT know. Our community is so large and influential that we can literally SEE sneaker companies acting on our suggestions or desires. Just look at the Military Blue and Fire Red AJ IV retro. Tell me with a straight face that those have nothing to do with NT. In 99, none of the higher ups at Nike gave a damn about what we thought or even knew we existed. Today, they have no choice BUT to listen if they want to succeed.

These days, NikeTalk members are EVERYWHERE. Visit a regional forum and theyll share deals at local stores and outlets with you. You can probably find somebody on here who WORKS at that local store. Somebody, somewhere almost always manages to have an inside scoop regardless of the topic or product. In the old days, you could barely find enough people in your local area to organize a single pickup game. Now, we have guys organizing TOURNAMENTS.
You cant say that NikeTalk is 100% better or 100% worse than it was 5 years ago. All we can objectively say is that its different. It offers a few disadvantages, but there are plenty of advantages as well. With 100,000 viewers a day, well be able to accomplish some things we NEVER couldve done with just 1,000 viewers a day.

As I understand it, Google uses a combination of CPM and CPC metering. Of course, they don't even bother to disclose the percentage they extract as commission... so everything operates behind a veil. It performs favorably to many alternatives, but it's certainly not what I'd call fair or accountable.

The long term goal is absolutely set in individually arraged sponsorship deals with companies whose products are of legitimate interest to our members. That's still a ways off, though, and the bulk of our ad space will likely require some form of 'automated' ad service to fill.

If you have some suggestions for alternative ad providers, let us know. I'm open to alternatives. Anyone have any experience with Ad Brite, for example?

I have a question.. if it cost so much to host.. who paid??? the tens of thousands of dollars???

In the earliest days of the community gold program, we could afford to pay the costs ourselves. In 2000 or so, I was able to subscribe to ad free service for $30 which I paid out of pocket. Nelson C routinely picks up the cost of our domain name at his own expense. As the site became more popular, we were able to use community chest donations to finance Community Gold. Sometimes we reached the goals ezboard set, other times, we feel short but ezboard graciously allowed us to continue operating ad free in exchange for the amount we were able to raise. For a period in 2002, we had Google Ad Sense units. However, they didnt perform well enough to support us (Im counting on you guys to change that this time!) and we had to lean on user contributions once again.

If youre looking for people to thank for the 6 & years we spent ad free, you should be grateful to everyone who donated to our community chest. Without them, we wouldnt even have had a fighting chance to reach our goals.

Were also incredibly grateful for the support and generosity of various individuals at Ezboard.
Ezboards original CEO Vanchau Nugyen and his successor Steven DeMello, who allowed us to maintain an ad free site for YEARS out of appreciation for the number of NikeTalk members who registered for ezsupporter service.

Those two have since left the site and, now, the current administration is more or less calling in our tab. Ezboard lost probably thousands of dollars on NikeTalk over the years although they consistently benefit from our presence via the number of users who sign up for ezboard accounts as a result of NikeTalks presence on its network. We account for about 1% of ezboards total users. That may sound small, but consider how many thousands of communities ezboard has. Thats like saying that 1% of the federal budget is insignificant.

So, its been a symbiotic relationship but, unlike NikeTalk, ezboard is a corporation and theyre responsible for generating profits. They cant lose money on a site like ours, and its not as though we can find another host out there willing to lose thousands of dollars each month in exchange for the honor of hosting NikeTalk.

Weve been with ezboard for years, the previous two CEOs have inspired my loyalty, and theyre building an exciting new product we feel our users would enjoy. In Yuku, we expect to receive superior forum software with features and performance unrivaled by any so-called competitor. Thats a product worth paying for. The question is, who should have to pay for it? I dont think you should and I know I cant afford it. So, were working with ezboard to allow ads to cover our hosting costs. To me, this seems like a fair solution for all involved.

one question. i know this forums is large and contains a number of posts and threads. I'm not sure what type of issue this is. Will the new forums still have twenty pages of threads per forum section? I remember creating a thread and within 10 days, it was off the site. It's understandable if its a size vs. money issue. Just thought I'd ask

i'd just like to give props to everybody on NT. i remember when we changed the banner or font sizes or some crap like that. people were moaning and b-ing like the day george bush got re-elected. I'm highly surprised at the positive turn of this. The (eventual) fall of NT may have a took a turn for the betterment(is this even a word?) of humanity.

People who use AdBrite make money from advertisers who pay the daily, weekly, monthly price to advertise on a specific site. If you have no advertisers buying ad space, you end up with the advertisers who are just paying per 1,000 impressions on the whole AdBrite network which are mostly casinos. It pays like 1-2 cents per click. So revenue is dependent on getting advertisers to pay to advertise on your site.

Should check out www.adtalks.com/blog/the_list/ for a list of different advertisers and www.sitepoint.com/forums under "Advertising Sales & Affiliate Programs". The members there can most definately help much more then anyone on here can. Automated ad system would probably be a good idea but then we might end up with ISS buying plenty of the spots.
