Why are there ads on NikeTalk? The answer is inside.

Are posts going to be transferred over?

I've read already about post counts and join dates and all that and understand it but just wondered if the existing threads will be able to be moved - the 'what should I wear with my Oly's?' aren't too important but it would be a shame to lose some of the archive stuff.

That's essentially saying the same thing, Steve. The board you have now is just a giant advertisement for your store/magazine/softcore porn centerfolds - and you wanted NikeTalk to BE that board. Not only that, but you wanted our staff to work on that board for free while you continued to harvest the fruits of our labor.

Meth, you should charge a yearly membership fee. This way it would weed out all of the ..uummmm, let's put it this way, all of the useless posters on this board. Might be a smaller community but it could be for the better, like the old days.

That may be something we can do in the future... but form follows function around here. After all, nobody comes here just because of how the site LOOKS. The content and functionality are what's important.

...Hm... well I don't visit much of the other forums because their format isn't the same as NT. NT is simple, and doesn't need a million forums and a bajillion flashy colors. Black and Red, I love it.

I'll keep on supporting NT... and I wouldn't mind if Yuku had some form of a system like ezSupporter...

Also, any response to why people aren't able to log into their accounts? I'm guessing the servers probably haven't transferred all of our names yet. Why is BSP so special?! >:

It looks like the NT gods owned the NT members, not Steve. Free hosting and no ads makes financial and long term sense. I've been around for a minute and Steve gets mad respect throughout the industry.

Instyleshoes, mostly expensive but legit.
ISS Forums, growing, some things better than NT, many the same, some worse.
Sole Magazine, high quality, some info you can't find even on NT, beautiful photography, staffers Retrokid, Professor K, and AG all respected.

Maybe a lovers quarrel that I missed? Each to his own I guess.

I don't see why not.

Of course, since the transition can't be instantaneous I would imagine that any posts added between the time an image of the board is "cloned" and the time the transfer is complete would be lost.

We don't have to concern ourselves with that for a few months, though.

Meth, you should charge a yearly membership fee.

I've been saying this for years: charging membership fees would be the death knell for this site.

If you look at the history of most content site categories, you can find plenty of examples of sites that've built up a significant following and then switched over to subscription-based business models to sustain themselves. Inevitably, opportunists will seize the opportunity and free alternatives will crop up. The overwhelming majority of these free startups will fail - as do most start-ups period - but the subscription-based "leader" will have their user base fractured by the free alternatives. Generally, at that point they'll either be replaced by one or more of the free sites or their business will have diminished to the point where simply fold up for lack of subscribers.

Unless you have an indispensable service with exclusive content rights, it's not going to work out.

Imagine if you had to start paying to read stories on ESPN.com. Would you pay $10 a month, or would you just start reading sports news somewhere else for free?

Remember, our users generate our content. If we scare 80% of our users away (and that's conservative) by introducing subscriptions, we lose the majority of our content providers.

The only subscription model that seems viable for sites like ours are those that offer "premium" features to paying users. Ezsupporter is an example of this (though we don't receive that money.) If we started offering subscribers the use of @niketalk.com email accounts, private forums, and other perks... we might be able to generate some supplemental income - but it probably wouldn't be sufficient to replace advertising, which will almost certainly remain our mainstay.

I appreciate that, Kev, but you don't count. According to Steve, you're just as "lame" as I am. In fact, from what I hear you're like totally lame to the max, dude... or is it "bro?" These forty year olds and their hip slang... who can keep up?

Slavery or a minimum wage job. Pick one.

If you've been around "for a minute", you'd understand the origin of the "respect".

Maybe I should surround myself with people who have actually earned respect within the industry and play it off as if I was down since day one as well.

Steve was only one of the first Internet resellers before he hooked up with the likes of Alex Wang and that Professor K, leeching off their name in the industry to fatten his wallet.

I'm not knocking the hustle. He can do whatever the hell he wants and make as much money as he wants. Good for him. But don't step to us like he gets respect because he deserves it. He never gives up the opportunity to slurp those in the industry that he has leeched his respect from. The relationship is sybiotic in nature. He gets the false image of being a "respected shoehead" in the community. In return, he perpetuates the mindless flow of revenue into the hobby, alienating those that actually have been down since day one. "Symbiotic" isn't even the correct description.

A better choice? Parasitic.

Yeah. Feel free to respect that.

But at what cost? Selling out fellow shoe heads? Profiting off of the hobby we grew up with? There are pros and cons to both sides of the spectrums. In the end, it's whoever could make the quick buck, and it seems I$$ is right on top of it when the matter comes to money.

SEE: ESPN Insider...

Okay, I don't get this whole "NikeTalk is selling out" and "It's all for the money" stuff.

You guys know how to read?

If you do, then go back and read the very first post in this whole topic.

Yeah, but if you just want to check the scores you can do that for free - and, in fact, read most of their stuff for free.

If you had to pay $10 for that as Meth said I'm sure you'd be checking other websites first.

Slavery? You want to use a word as strong as slavery to inaccurately describe the people who donate their time to run a forum? Just in case you don't know the definition of slavery, here it is: "The state of one bound in servitude as the property of a slaveholder or household."

I can assure you that nobody is bound to anything that I do. It is called "for the love of the culture" and many people put in a lot of hard work to ensure a smooth running forum. Additionally, the forum actually costs some serious money to run but that is part of giving back to the community. Yes, there are links to Sole Collector as Sole Collector has pretty much taken over the responsibility of managing the forum monetarily wise (servers / tech support).

I assume that you don't understand when people read your posts witin this thread that you are owning yourself.

And as a gesture of good faith to the NT community here is a list of sites that sell fake shoes through Googles Ad Sense. You can add these to your filter and most likely you wont have any problems until a new fake site is created.

No need for all this bickering. Whatever to keep NT afloat, I'm down for, as well as the majority of us here...

But I will say this...

In reality--especially after my trips to NYC, D.C., Orlando, and Philly the past few months chatting with various companies on my projects--all I can say is...

Some things are NOT what they appear...

TRUST ME...

You drop names during lunch business meetings, thinking people have clout and are respected, and higher-ups start talking honestly in confidentiality... You're just in awe... Shaking your head.

But I guess that's life and the people in it...
