The last children by Truthgetsbusy

I really don't know how true that the original statement is. I think you assume that kids don't go outside because of the technology that we have now.But the only major difference is the internet. I stay seeing kids outside, on bikes, and doing the same crap we did as children.

We are the last children...the last generation of growing up without the internet. We grew up in the 80's/early 90's....this is when kids had lives. During this era kids had no choice but to go outside because the only thing poppin inside was Nintendo/Sega or some VHS tapes. From the city to burbs we had a crew of friends and just went out and about. We went on little missions to the corner store or in the woods or whatever. We played ball in the park til it got dark or the street lights came on. We played football in the streets. We rode bikes. We knocked on doors and ran. We ate candy and looked at dirty magazines. We had school clothes and play clothes. We seen Michael Jordan play. We had trading cards. We watched cartoons on Saturdays.

We are the last children...we didn't have swag. We didn't have myspace, facebook, twitter or whatever to connect us with people who we don't give a damn about. We didn't have our JV basketball roster posted on the school website. We couldn't google anybody, anything, anywhere. We didn't download music. We didn't have thousands of pictures of ourselves.

We are the last children because we didn't a cell phone to Jr/Sr year of high school. And that phone had a green background with black text. That phone was for calling/texting/snake/tetris and chirping if you was ballin.

This is not to hate on the younger generation but I feel for you guys. We know what its like to have peace and quiet. We know what its like to knock on somebody's door and ask their parents if they were home. We know what its like to call a girl on her house phone and hope she answers before her mama do.

I feel for the younger generation because every song has a sample from a older song, every movie is a remake of an older movie or cartoon. It's really sad the lack of oringinal entertainment these days. Every shoe you guys get is a retro or fusion. I feel for you guys. Trying to bring back high top fades and 80's fashion....why? Make your own mark on history.

We are the last children. I fear that we are slowly losing touch with reality.
Of course kids aren't doing some of these things as much, people 20 years older than you would probably say the same to you and most who grewup in the same era.

I don't really see where you're coming from with your argument about the internet or any other form of communication. If anything it has been a plus. The only downside would probably be obesity, I guess. But the good outweighs the bad.

And you feel for them because they wear retro sneakers?

Music issampled?

The "kids of this generation" will be making the same complaints 20 years from now.

A lot of those activities you mentioned (mostly the ones in the first paragraph) are still very common. Going to the store with friends? Playing ball untilsundown? My little brother does that on a regular basis.

Nothing in your post makes me feel that these kids are growing up with no lives. Some of the flaws you pointed out are no one's fault but the parents'.

Hell, I wish I had this stuff when I was younger.

this isn't really about being a kid...its more about til you're 18. Teenage years count too. I've heard so many people complainabout txting...there are people that end relationships off a txt message. Trust I have a little brother that was born in 92 and we aint the same. He'snot anti-social, he plays Varsity football, has friends and everything but we aint the same man.

Put it this way my boy stays on a street that ALWAYS has kids outside....that street is like Vegas for kids. Now back in the day that was AVERAGE, nothing totalk about. But now we talk about it like its something outta the norm....because it is. And don't forget these problems that I was talking about areproblems for adults too tho.

I think it's this new generation of children (born late 90's/early 00's) that are growing up with myspace, internet, cell phones at the age of 10.

Man this post brought back memories

I remember being outside playing for atleast 10 hours a day during the summer

Walking to the big field to play a big game of football or throw'em up buss'em up

Moms used to make you come in and eat a snack or take a little break

Everybody walking to the city pool, and eating sack lunch

Who remembers free sack lunch?

Great post OP.

I look at a these young kids and their just weirdos. A lot of them lack the soical skills like u mention. Seem like their all scared to be themselves.(aroundmy way at least) Everybody wanna be cool, think they know everything and they all are just followers. idk if its bc im of adult age now, but these kids arejust lame flat out. I try to kick game to a lot of young cats and little cousins, but I just dont have the patiences for it bc it seems so pointsless.

But anway "Bone thugs and hormony", getting notes from girls asking do you like her check yes or no, "ninja turtles", "kill theman", or being the first with those new Jordans, Penny, Griffeys or Deion Sanders in school. Aww the good ol days.

yeah i mean i agree in some aspects, I do feel that texting cripples are social skills, esp talking to girls, lol, never have to sit through an awkward silenceftw tho.

After reading the first sentence I knew where this was going...and youre totally right. It makes me wanna go back to the good times when I was a kid and had nocare in the world. Home phones were the only means of communication back then. But then again our parents or even people 10 years older than us could say thesame thing about us. Imagine the TV that they were watching prolly only having a couple channels compared to us... Anyways I wouldn't change our child hoodfor anything. I loved being carefree and riding my bike to friends houses just to see if they were home and wanted to go ride a bike. Tell me how many kidswould want to go ride bikes all day now a days let alone parents that would let that happen. Its pretty sad to think about it. I remember action figures usedto be the %!%$

the old days back when you used to get a busy signal and have to keep trying to call back until they were off the phone

Great post! I agree with everything but sadly, the generation today will say this 10-20 years later. It will look something like this:

Remember the good old days of us playing yugioh cards, beyblades, and collecting Pokemon cards? The great times being spent during recess linking our gameboysto have a 4 way battle. The amount of texts that we sent back and forth. The games we played such as Warcraft were great times. Facebook/Myspace any girl thatall the guys had crushes on. Learning photoshop. Camwhoring non stop during lunch time. Spending our parents money on stuff we didn't even need. Playingflash games during computer labs where we had to research for projects. Having the latest touch screen gadgets. Playing with the automatic soap/toweldispenser. Downloading all these songs/videos on to our latest ipods. Having motorized bikes such as those small pocket bikes. Having the newest clothes everyweek bought using parents money. Having limos to our elementary school's graduation.

and THAT'S how I see it will be looking like when they talk about their generation. SMH.

Please explain why. While I was growing up did I have access to a computer? No. When I was growing up did I have a cell phone? No. When I was growing up did Istay at home and play video games? No. When I was growing up was everything handed to me just because I wanted it? No. Just because we are a couple of yearsaway early 90's kids know exactly what you 80's children are talking about. Also another thing we are discussing childhood here and how the newgeneration has no childhood. What about the adults nowadays that try to fit in and be part of the new generations childhood? I'm talking about adults withfacebooks, myspace accounts, and twitters trying to be hip and be apart of the new generation?

After reading some of these posts, some of you guys have to be joking. A lot of you are simply comparing things like, technology you used and the clothes youwore to what goes on today. Please stop.

Fashion was different than what it is today? You didn't have an iPhone? Well, no duh.

Now they text instead of writing notes in class? Again, please stop.

"We used to go to the library to do research, now these kids got it easy. The can find all of that info in the matter of an hour in the comfort of theirhomes. Spoiled brats.

If you think the quality of things you had were better growing up, then fine.

In no way, are any of these things preventing children to have a childhood.

Nice explanation peon

This is essentially another "I miss the 90s, this decade sucks" thread.

And anyone born in the mid to late 80s, or early 90s are basically in the same era. They watched the same cartoons, watched the same athletes in their prime, played the same video game systems, etc.

I don't know why the OP excluded people born in the early 90s from his post when stating people born prior to '88 would understand his stance.

Please don't tell me the few years you spent in the 80s made a big difference.

QFT. I was born in '91 but I was a Power Ranger fanatic, thought watchin' Jordan play was the greatest (pops introduced me

), and recordin' radio and ridin' bikes. I got a cell phone at like 14,and didn't even know what the hell a text message was.

this is the truth.

No, it's not.

In a child's early years their development and interest for certain things has a great deal to do with the colors associated with what their seeing. Infants and toddlers are attracted to beautiful arrays of colorful things. Can you name anything more colorful than video games or anything with enhanceddigital graphics? Probably not. So when children today see these things they become interested and when their minds reach the ages of 4-5+ and they start tofigure out how these contraptions work they develop an even bigger infatuation for them. IMO the invention of the PS1 started the downfall of socialism andinteraction between neighborhood kids. That was what? 1995? '96?

And to the dude that said this generation still draws...

This:

will always be better than...

This:

And right now I'd say the only creative cartoon is Spongebob because the animation is still clever and the stories are still realistic and within the realmof possibility given their scenarios.

But here's my reminisce for the night....because this was THAT game:
